Damascus Samurai Sword

Explore our Damascus steel samurai sword collection, featuring hand-forged katana, wakizashi, and tanto crafted from folded and layered steel. The repeated folding process produces hundreds to thousands of visible steel layers, giving each blade its signature watered surface pattern. Combined with differential clay tempering and full-tang construction, our Damascus samurai swords represent the intersection of visual artistry and traditional Japanese blade craft. Frequently Asked Questions

How is the pattern created on a Damascus samurai sword?
The pattern results from the forging process itself. The smith starts with a billet of high-carbon steel, heats it, and folds it over onto itself. Each fold doubles the layer count. After 12 to 16 folds, the blade contains thousands of alternating layers with slightly different carbon concentrations. When the finished blade is polished and etched in a mild acid solution, these layers react at different rates, revealing the characteristic flowing pattern. The specific pattern depends on how the smith manipulates the steel during folding — straight folds produce linear grain, twisting creates spiral motifs, and stacking different billets creates mosaic patterns. No two Damascus blades are identical.
Is Damascus steel stronger than single-steel samurai swords?
A properly forged Damascus blade is structurally comparable to a high-quality single-steel blade and may be tougher in some respects. The folding process eliminates impurities, distributes carbon evenly, and creates a homogeneous internal grain structure. This refinement can improve the blade’s resistance to cracking and chipping compared to a single-steel blade of equivalent carbon content. However, the folding does not dramatically change the steel’s fundamental hardness — a Damascus blade and a T10 blade heat-treated to the same specification will perform similarly in edge retention. The primary advantage of Damascus is structural refinement combined with visual uniqueness.
Does Damascus steel require special maintenance?
The basic routine is the same as any carbon steel blade: apply choji oil every two to three months, avoid bare-hand contact, and store in a dry environment. The one additional consideration is that the etched surface pattern can fade over time if the blade is over-oiled or exposed to alkaline substances. To maintain pattern contrast, use only a thin oil layer and avoid cleaning products that could alter the acid etch. If the pattern does fade, a professional sword polisher can re-etch the surface to restore the layered contrast. Regular care keeps Damascus steel in excellent display condition for decades.
Can a Damascus samurai sword have a hamon temper line?
Yes, and the combination is one of the most visually complex finishes available on a samurai sword. The hamon is produced through a separate process (differential clay tempering) that can be applied to any carbon steel, including Damascus. When both features are present, the blade displays two overlapping visual patterns: the folded layer grain running across the body and the hamon line marking the boundary between the hard edge and softer spine. These two patterns interact under different lighting angles, creating a surface that reveals new details depending on how you hold the blade. Our clay-tempered Damascus samurai swords specifically feature this dual-pattern effect.

Placed the order on July 14th and received the sword today. Apparently when TrueKatana says "in stock" that means in stock in China.....still, the tracking was not bad at all, I could log on and get info anytime, right up until delivery. I admit I was apprehensive about paying this much for a Katana, but I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy with this purchase. r
The fit and finish is absolutely perfect, I cannot find a flaw in this blade, handle or scabbard. It even came with a neat silk lined case that I wasn't expecting. The Hamon is perfect, the blade has a beautiful taper and it is true to all the features of a WWII type 98 Shin Gunto. Anyone worried about the quality matching the price should buy with confidence, you will not be disappointed with this Katana!!!!!!
