Frequently Asked Questions

What features distinguish an authentic Japanese katana sword from a decorative replica?
Authenticity in a Japanese katana comes down to materials, method, and construction working together. The blade must be forged from a suitable high-carbon steel - T10, 1095, or folded Damascus are all appropriate choices - and shaped by hand through repeated heating and hammering, not stamped or cast. The heat treatment must be differential: clay tempering is the traditional method, where the spine is insulated during quenching to remain tough while the edge hardens, producing a visible hamon as a direct record of the process. Full-tang construction, where the steel runs continuously from tip to pommel, is essential for structural integrity. The fittings should be individually fitted rather than generic drop-in parts, and the handle wrapped in genuine ito over real ray skin. Decorative wall hangers typically skip most of these elements - they may look similar at a glance but lack the internal construction and material quality that define an authentic piece.
How do I properly care for and maintain an authentic Japanese katana sword over the long term?
Maintenance is straightforward but should be done consistently. The most important task is keeping the blade dry and lightly oiled. After any handling, the oils from your skin can cause spotting on carbon steel, so wipe the blade with a soft cloth before storing. Every few months - or after any extended display period - apply a thin coat of choji oil using a soft cloth or the traditional uchiko powder ball method. Spread the oil in thin, even strokes from base to tip, always moving in the same direction. Store the katana horizontally in its saya, edge up, on a proper sword stand. Avoid areas with high humidity or dramatic temperature swings, as these accelerate both rust and damage to the wooden fittings. Never store the blade without its saya or lean it against a wall without proper support. With this level of care, a well-made katana can be maintained in excellent condition for decades.
Does T10 steel or Damascus perform better in an authentic Japanese katana?
In practical terms for display and light-use collectibles, T10 and Damascus katana perform similarly. T10 is a purpose-made high-carbon tool steel with consistent grain structure optimized for edge retention - it clay-tempers cleanly and produces a well-defined hamon. Damascus, in the modern pattern-welded sense, involves layering two or more steel alloys and folding them repeatedly. The resulting billet has variable carbon content across the layers, which can produce a more complex hamon but requires careful heat treatment to achieve the best properties. For display and occasional handling, both are excellent materials. The more meaningful difference is visual: T10 blades have a clean, polished appearance with the hamon as the primary feature, while Damascus blades carry an all-over patterned surface that many collectors find compelling. For collectible use, the choice is really about which presentation you find more appealing.
What should I look for when comparing authentic Japanese katana swords at a similar price point?
At any given price point, focus on three areas: steel type and heat treatment, handle construction, and overall fit and finish. For steel, T10 clay-tempered and quality Damascus are preferable to generic 1045 carbon steel if authenticity is your priority - both require more skilled heat treatment and produce a more interesting result. Verify that the product explicitly mentions a real hamon and full-tang construction. For the handle, look for ray skin and properly tied ito rather than synthetic wrapping. Fit and finish details - how cleanly the habaki seats on the blade, how evenly the ito is wrapped, how smoothly the blade draws from the saya - often indicate overall build quality. Finally, consider the balance: a well-made katana should feel balanced naturally in a neutral grip, not front-heavy or awkward to hold. These are the details that separate a genuinely crafted piece from a lower-quality imitation at the same price.

Another beautiful sword! The reason I chose the Phoenix theme is because in the middle of May 2040CE The Mandate of Heaven will occur. This is caused by the Phoenix weapon. The 6th seal of Revelation, the sun will darken, worldwide volcanism & earthquakes, oceans slip basins, red rain red mud will fall from the sky. And the return of the Vapor Canopy. Cheers!

The black one on top, in the image. Excellent quality, a true masterpiece. I have compared it to my other one, white one. As far as quality, balance and cutting potential. The one I bought from true katana (black one) is unparalleled in every way.

Mekugi neboli namontované do rukoväte (Tsuky) moc esteticky.

I like knives and I have different types of knives and hand sharpener, electric sharpener (Tormek). I keep my knives always sharp. First time owner of a Katana. First impression is good. The steel is original Damascus. The hamon looks good. r
r
Things I did not like much:r
1. It was written that it is razor sharp. No, definitely not razor sharp, even noth sharp. It doesn't cut folded paper towel even though I press much. With fingers, I don't feel the sharpened. After sharpening my knives, I test them and I am what is sharp and what is notr
2. Polish is not good enough. In some points of blade, with my nail, I can easily feel the Damascus layers.r
3. Habaki: design is good, but workmanship looks poor, machine made.r
4. Saya: The thing that really bothered me was the saya. When you shake the blade, it makes wabbling noise. The blade does not perfectly fit to Saya. r
r
I think for this price, it was good enough.

Placed the order on July 14th and received the sword today. Apparently when TrueKatana says "in stock" that means in stock in China.....still, the tracking was not bad at all, I could log on and get info anytime, right up until delivery. I admit I was apprehensive about paying this much for a Katana, but I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy with this purchase. r
The fit and finish is absolutely perfect, I cannot find a flaw in this blade, handle or scabbard. It even came with a neat silk lined case that I wasn't expecting. The Hamon is perfect, the blade has a beautiful taper and it is true to all the features of a WWII type 98 Shin Gunto. Anyone worried about the quality matching the price should buy with confidence, you will not be disappointed with this Katana!!!!!!
