Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main types of Japanese swords and how do they differ?
The major Japanese sword types are defined primarily by blade length and the historical role associated with each. The katana is the longest sword worn by samurai as a sidearm, with a blade of 60 to 75 centimeters and an overall length of 95 to 115 centimeters in its saya. The wakizashi is the shorter companion sword of the daisho pair, with a blade of 30 to 60 centimeters. The tanto is the shortest sword, with a blade under 30 centimeters, traditionally worn as a personal defense weapon and for close situations. The tachi is an older, longer curved sword that preceded the katana and was typically suspended from the belt rather than thrust through it edge-up. The naginata is a pole weapon with a curved blade, distinct from the purely hand-held sword forms. Each type has its own production conventions, blade geometry variations, and cultural associations. For collectors, each type also has its own display character: katana for long-format display at standing height, wakizashi for mid-format, tanto for close-examination desk display, and naginata for floor-stand vertical display.
How is a Japanese sword made and what makes one better than another?
A Japanese sword is made through a process of forging, shaping, clay tempering, and fitting that has remained essentially consistent in its fundamentals for over a thousand years. The blade begins as a billet of high-carbon steel that is heated and hammered repeatedly to refine the steel's grain structure and shape the blade's basic geometry. The blade profile - the curve, the cross-section shape, the point geometry - is established through this forging process and refined through grinding. Clay tempering is applied by coating the blade with clay in a specific pattern before the critical quench: areas left without clay harden to high hardness, areas under clay remain tougher and more flexible. This differential hardening produces the visible hamon line and the performance profile associated with traditional Japanese swords. After quenching, the blade is polished progressively through finer abrasives until the surface character of the steel and the hamon are visible. Fittings are individually fitted to the specific blade rather than assembled from generic components. The quality differences between swords come from the skill of each step in this process: the consistency of the forging, the application of the clay, the quality of the quench, the execution of the polish, and the precision of the fitting work.
What is the cultural significance of the Japanese sword as a collected object?
The Japanese sword occupies a unique position among collected objects because it sits at the intersection of technical craft, martial tradition, aesthetic philosophy, and cultural identity. In Japanese history, the sword was not merely a weapon but a symbol of social status, personal character, and spiritual responsibility - samurai culture developed an entire ethical and philosophical framework around the ownership, care, and use of swords that extended far beyond their practical military function. The tradition of sword appreciation in Japan - kantei, the art of judging and appreciating swords - is itself a centuries-old practice with specific vocabulary, methodology, and connoisseurship standards. For collectors outside Japan, the Japanese sword carries this cultural weight as an object that is simultaneously a masterwork of traditional metalworking craft, a significant historical artifact, and a representation of one of the most developed martial and aesthetic traditions in human history. Owning and displaying a quality Japanese sword is a form of engagement with this tradition, and understanding the sword's construction - its steel, its hamon, its geometry - deepens the engagement progressively over time.
What are the most important things to know before buying a first Japanese sword?
Before buying a first Japanese sword, three areas of understanding make the purchase significantly better. First, understand the construction standards: full-tang, high-carbon steel, and proper heat treatment are the markers of a genuine sword rather than a decorative piece. Know what these mean and how to identify them in a product description or by examination. Second, understand the maintenance requirement: carbon steel blades require periodic oiling and should be wiped clean after handling. This is a simple routine but it is non-negotiable for long-term preservation of the blade. Stainless steel blades require less maintenance but are not used in genuine Japanese sword production at quality levels, so choosing carbon steel means committing to the care routine. Third, understand the display requirements: a katana needs approximately 115 centimeters of clear horizontal space in its saya, and appropriate display hardware - a horizontal stand with properly spaced pegs - positions the sword correctly. With these three areas understood, the first purchase is well-informed and the experience of owning a Japanese sword can be fully appreciated from the beginning.

The katana itself is glorious, absolutely glorious. A worthy piece of craftsmanship. However, when I ordered a “full-tang” blade, I thought the sword would he fucntionally sharpened. It’s essentially a blunt-edged blade, no cutting ability whatsoever.
