Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of a standing sword holder over a wall-mounted display?
A standing sword holder and a wall-mounted display both present swords in the horizontal edge-up orientation, but they differ in installation requirements, portability, and visual character. A standing holder requires no installation - it is placed on any flat surface immediately and can be repositioned or moved without tools or repair to the surface. A wall mount requires finding studs or anchors, drilling, leveling, and leaves holes in the wall if removed. For renters, frequent movers, or collectors who reconfigure their display regularly, the standing holder is the clearly more practical choice. From a visual standpoint, a standing holder creates a more furniture-like display context - the base and structure are visible and contribute to the composition. A wall mount allows the swords to appear to float against the wall with minimal visible hardware, which creates a more architectural, gallery-like effect. Neither is objectively better; the right choice depends on installation constraints and aesthetic preference.
Can a standing sword holder be moved between rooms without removing the swords?
Moving a standing sword holder with swords on it between rooms is possible for short distances if done carefully, but it is not the recommended approach. The swords on the stand create an awkward, top-heavy load that is difficult to control through doorways, around corners, and over any floor surface transitions. A sword that shifts on its pegs during the move can fall, and even a minor impact of a saya against a door frame or wall can mark the finish. The better practice is to remove the swords from the stand first, carry each sword separately in its saya, and move the empty stand on its own. The empty stand is lightweight, manageable, and much easier to navigate through a home than the loaded assembly. The extra minute of separating and reassembling the display is worth the protection it provides to both the swords and the stand. If you move the display frequently, keeping a soft cloth or sword bag near the display for quick wrapping of each sword during transit makes the routine faster.
How does a three-tier standing holder stay stable with three swords loaded?
A three-tier standing holder manages the stability challenge through the relationship between base dimensions and the height and weight of the loaded assembly. Three katana-length swords in their saya represent approximately 3 to 4.5 kilograms of combined load distributed across three tiers. The stand's base is weighted and sized so that the center of gravity of the loaded assembly remains within the base footprint under all normal display and handling conditions - including removing one sword from the top tier while the other two remain. The tier structure is built with proper joinery rather than simple connections, which keeps the column rigid under the lateral forces that occur during the sword removal routine. When placing the stand, use a flat, level surface and position it away from high-traffic paths where it might be bumped. Under these conditions, a properly made three-tier standing holder maintains three swords reliably without any supplementary securing.
What is the best way to pack a standing sword holder for shipping or travel?
Packing a standing sword holder for shipping or travel requires protecting the lacquered surfaces from contact with other hard surfaces and padding the structure against impact. First, disassemble the stand if it allows it - removing tier brackets from the column and the column from the base produces flat, manageable components that pack more efficiently than the assembled stand. Wrap each component individually in bubble wrap or soft foam, paying particular attention to the peg ends and any decorative carved areas where protrusions are most vulnerable to contact damage. Pack the wrapped components in a box with enough padding material - crumpled paper, foam peanuts, or additional bubble wrap - so that the components cannot shift or contact each other during transit. For the assembled stand, wrap the entire piece in a layer of foam sheeting, then place it in a box with padding on all sides. Avoid packing the stand in a box where it will be in direct contact with other items. The lacquer finish is the most damage-susceptible surface - protecting it from contact and impact during transit keeps the stand looking presentable when it arrives.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
